«Discuss how Chopin uses irony effectively throughout the story» Sometimes in life, events occur that are not exactly or even sometimes the complete opposite of what we expect. That is what we call irony. In the short story «The Story of an Hour», written by Kate Chopin, this kind of situation happens frequently and is demonstrated effectively throughout the text. The way Louise Mallard received the news of her husband’s death and the way she reacted to it, as well as the whole ending of this story full of unexpected events is completely ironic. To begin with, Louise received the news of the death of her husband that perished in a railroad accident in a way that is ironic once the ending of the story is known to us. Her friends took good care of finding a way to give her the bad news very gently in order to avoid a harsh reaction which could have caused her to have a heart attack. However, her friends were not able to prevent an extreme reaction from Louise when she realized her husband was actually still alive. She died when she saw him step into the house. What is ironic about this situation is the fact that she ends up having a heart attack even though her friends tried to avoid it, but it was because of the opposite information. To continue, the reaction of Louise to the tragic news of her husband’s death is also ironic. While being in her room alone for consolation, Louise ended up realizing things that are the opposite of what would be a normal reaction. Instead of feeling sad and sorrowful, she gradually felt more and more free and relieved by her being on her own now. She realized she was going to be happier without her husband and that his death turned out to be a positive event for her. That is not a reaction we expect to have from a person that has just got informed of the death of someone close, especially in so short a period of time (the story occurring only throughout a single hour). The fact that she realized, during the grief of her husband’s death, that she will finally be happy without him is ironic. In this paragraph concerning grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, and spelling, working on the followings:12 would improve your text. The second situation which I found was very ironic is the whole ending of the story. Firstly, Josephine, Louise’s sister, thought that if Louise stayed in her room all alone, she would turn ill, so she convinced her to come out with her. Just when she stepped out of her room, Louise saw Brently, her husband, entering the house. That event set off Louise’s heart attack: the illness that killed her. The irony in this situation is the fact that Josephine wanted to prevent her sister’s illness by getting her out of her room, and that is what finally caused her death. Secondly, before dying, Louise had just realized she was going to be able to live fully for herself and that she was going to be happier and free. She believed a happy life was ahead of her. Unfortunately, she died a few moments later, which is ironic because she thought a long life was awaiting her. In conclusion, all the examples above demonstrate clearly that in «The Story of an Hour», irony is effective, especially in the receiving of the bad news and Louise’s reaction to it, as well as the ending of the story. 573 words 573 words Title : yes Content: 18/20 Coherence: 18/20 Style and Syntax: 17/20 Total 53/60
